Ad Boc/Paul Cerqua - Beginners Only Songs (Crimson Spiral)

This collection of new recordings features his earliest songs, which were originally played around Boston with his band, Beginners Only, but never recorded. Thus the title, Beginners Only Songs. And he has the original bassist and backing vocalist from that group, Paul Cerqua, in tow. With Paul on bass duty, Ad sings lead and plays the drums and guitars, and there is a lot more "guitar playing" on this disc, for those who are into that kind of thing. This time out, the pop songs are indeed guitar-driven, and flavored a bit more with an energetic postpunk sound, as Ad and Paul recall formative days listening to local favorites The Neighborhoods and playing records by The Jam, Buzzcocks, Descendents, Replacements, and so many others. Beginners Only Songs came together quickly, helped by the fact that the songs were already composed, but Ad still has well over 200 unfinished ideas to work out for future records. So, much more to come.
